Bamboo and its environmental benefits

Bamboo is one of the world's most prolific and fastest-growing plants and is able to reach maturity in about four years. The average person is usually astounded when learning that there are more than 1000 documented uses of bamboo. Bаmbоо wood is a plentiful, renewable, and natural рrоduсt with many super сhаrасtеrіѕtісѕ. The Royal Craft Wood team collects all the benefits of bamboo products to show you everything about this magic plant.

Advantages of bamboo products

As the world’s fastest-growing plant, this plant is both earth-friendly and extremely useful for those who want to get high-quality products. Although bamboo is sometimes mistaken for a tree, it’s actually a grass. This may sound like a primitive material to use for things like bowls and cutting boards, but nothing could be further from the truth. Let's talk about the benefits of using eco-friendly products.

Natural and chemical-free

Bamboo іѕ grоwn without uѕіng реѕtісіdеѕ оr chemical fеrtіlіzеrѕ. Bаmbоо fiber іѕ 100% biodegradable. As it is a grass rather than a tree, it can quickly grow to a harvestable size. The environmental benefits don’t stop there. Bamboo’s root systems are an effective reinforcement against soil erosion. Due to its fast-growing nature, bamboo farms that make responsible use of available land are an incredibly potent form of carbon sequestration.

Strong but soft

One оf the mаіn benefits уоu wіll notice whеn уоu сhооѕе tо uѕе this product in your саbіnеtѕ іѕ іtѕ ѕtrеngth. Stylish

Bamboo cabinetry comes in a host of different styles and you will find that you can choose from slab or shaker depending on your overall room or kitchen design. For modern homes, the slab tends to be a top choice, presenting a smooth and sleek look, while for the more traditional home, the shaker shelves add that character and finish to the room design with ease.

Sustainable and a renewable resource

You will be thrilled to know that bamboo wood is a sustainable and renewable product.  This makes it eco-friendly. When it comes to selling your home one day, this can be an attractive feature and selling point for prospective buyers. In fact, this is what can increase the asking price and help you get the selling price you want. Bamboo cabinetry offers a choice of different grains, which is very beneficial and enables you to have something unique in your kitchen or bathroom. When the cabinets arrive, take a close look at the grain and see how it works for you.  The supplier must allow you to choose a vertical or horizontal grain depending on your particular design and what look you prefer in your space.

Affordable price

Another benefit you may find when choosing the precise material is that while it gives all these benefits and is renewable, it is not more expensive than your traditional woods. In fact, the price should be similar when compared to your everyday wooden cabinets, which can help you complete your design within your budget and still enjoy the advantages it has to provide.

Sturdy and long-lasting

The very last issue you’ll find when it comes to bamboo wood cabinetry is the danger of it warping is reduced compared to other types of wood. This material is so sturdy and long-lasting, and it can withstand the heat or moisture in the kitchen or bathroom with ease.

Bamboo vs. plastic products

Bamboo products are quickly replacing many plastic items for a number of reasons. The first is that bamboo cutting boards are more resistant to bacteria growth and are easier on a chef’s knife. While bamboo stays straight and true, plastic cutting boards tend to warp when exposed to moderate heat. I discovered this after putting a plastic cutting board in the dishwasher. Plastic bowls can leach chemicals into the food that you eat. This is especially true when eating foods high in acidic content, such as sauerkraut. Bamboo dinnerware will not only add an elegant, earthy look to your table, it’s also a giant leap away from ingesting latent chemicals from the plastic manufacturing process. As mentioned above, bamboo is 100% biodegradable. While a plastic utensil will still be in the landfill when your children’s children have children, bamboo will completely biodegrade in under a year.

Bamboo vs. wood products

Continuing with the cutting board comparison mentioned above, let’s take a look at how bamboo compares to wood products. A bamboo cutting board generally requires much less maintenance than its wood counterpart. Bamboo tableware does not acquire the rough texture that wood utensils seem to exhibit within a few months of use. While some may find it odd to eat with anything other than metal silverware, others enjoy the taste of their food more when metal is not placed in their mouth with each bite. Give it a try. You just may love it. Due to the fast growth rate of bamboo, products created from bamboo do not contribute to deforestation the way that wood products do.

Bamboo mold: reasons and risks

The most harmful bamboo mold feasts on the lignin in the bamboo strands and can cause permanent damage unless you kill it early. It isn't difficult to do. But the right proper care and maintenance can prevent the bamboo damage and keep your items in good condition. Drying the bamboo and giving it a protective coating can prevent mold and limit a recurrence.

What causes the growth of fungus on bamboo

Fungus originates from very fine, air-borne spores present in fruit bodies and causes the biological degradation of bamboo. They are nourished from the starch and other carbohydrates (sugar) that are present in bamboo culms. Their damage will show on the surface of the bamboo. The other reason for bamboo mold is oxygen. The fungus needs to breathe; therefore, oxygen will increase their growth. Moreover, fungi love humid environments! Moisture levels of 40 to 80% are ideal for their rapid growth.

What types of fungi attack bamboo

There are three dangerous and popular fungi types. Let’s talk about them in detail. Surface molds grow on the surface and at the cross-ends of bamboo culms. It is the least dangerous fungi type because it can be easily wiped off. Plus, they have no effect on the strength of the bamboo. Stain fungi can attack all bamboo items you have. This type is noticed by shades of blue/grayish-black discoloration on the surface in the form of spots and streaks. Stain fungi do not affect the strength properties of bamboo. Decay fungi are the most dangerous type. It causes the most serious kind of damage and grows within the lumen of the cells. Early decay is difficult to detect but can be characterized by dampness in bamboo. At later stages of deterioration, the culm is soft to the touch and may only be a fibrous or powdery mass.

How to clean mold from bamboo products

It is important to take care of all your items made from bamboo wood. Therefore, here are instructions for you to keep everything clean.

Step 1. Take mold-infested bamboo furniture outside to treat it. You need to do that to prevent the spread of mold in the house. Step 2. Wipe off the surface mold with a rag. A lot of household cleaners work. The must-have ingredients include vinegar, lemon oil, ammonia or bleach. Caution: never use ammonia and bleach together - the combination produces poisonous gases. Step 3. Spray full-strength vinegar on the mold, using a plant spray bottle. If you prefer, use full-strength lemon oil. You can also mix a cleaning solution by combining 1 cup of ammonia, 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup of baking soda in a gallon of water. When mixed together, baking soda and vinegar produce carbon dioxide, which helps kill mold. Step 4. Use a toothbrush or a soft brush to scrub (gently) the mold from joints and crevices. Step 5. Rinse the affected area with water, and then allow it to dry. Step 6. Use a dry cloth to ensure surfaces are 100% dry. Oil the cutting board to protect it for the future.

Is bamboo the best

Even when both the plastic and wood boards were new in the experiments (and thus didn’t have any scratches), the studies still found that bacteria are less likely to survive on wooden boards. Bamboo wood is not only environmentally friendly, sturdy, durable and safe but also stylish and eye-catching. We hope our article will help you to see all the benefits of bamboo products.
